West Virginia FAQ

I just moved from out-of-state. Am I required to apply for a new commercial driver’s license?
You are required to transfer your out-of-state CDL to a West Virginia CDL within 30 days of establishing residency in the state. You must turn over your out-of-state CDL when you are issued a West Virginia one.

Can I mail in my CDL renewal information?
That depends on where you live. If there is a DMV in your county, then you must renew in person. If there is not a DMV branch located in your county, then you will receive information a few weeks prior to your CDL expiration date on how to renew by mail.

What am I required to bring at the time of my CDL renewal?

You are required to bring the following:

  • Your current West Virginia driver’s license.

  • Proof of your West Virginia address.

  • The renewal notice received in the mail.

  • Current DOT long form physical.

What type of background check is preformed when you are applying for a CDL?
Unless you are applying for a hazardous materials endorsement, only your driving record will be checked. If you are applying for a HazMat endorsement, you will be subject to a criminal background check and will be responsible for the required fees. Background checks are performed by the TSA and cost a non-refundable fee of $94.

How often am I required to pass a physical exam in the state of West Virginia?
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, you are required to pass the exam every two years. However, some West Virginia trucking companies may required physical exams and drug testing more often.

Where should I begin my search for a West Virginia truck driving job?

Like all other states, you must be at least 18 years old to test for an intrastate CDL and at least 21 to apply for an interstate CDL that would enable you to drive in states other than West Virginia.

What is the cost to replace a lost or stolen West Virginia CDL?
The cost is $5. To receive a replacement, you must visit your local DMV branch and show proof and identification and your West Virginia residency.
